We are almost ready to accept sea turtles in our new animal hospital! There are several items that we need to fully equip the hospital for our first sea turtle patients. Your donations will be used to care for rehabilitating sick and injured sea turtles throughout the year. Please drop off any donated items or funds to the National Marine Life Center offices from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

Pirate Tree at Jonathan Bourne Public Library

Ahoy, Mateys! Instead of Jolly Ol’ St. Nick, how ’bout the Jolly Roger? For enough doubloons, you can win yerself a genu-wine Pirate Tree!

Just head yerself over to the Jonathan Bourne Public Library ‘n bid on the National Marine Life Center’s Pirate Tree. While yer at it, check out all the other great trees being auctioned off for other great causes. And leave an extra sumpthin’ at the Giving Trees, where donations can be left for the Bourne Food Pantry, Cape Cod Cares for the Troops, and Carriage House.

You ‘specially don’t wanna miss the Caring Christmas Wonderland on Friday, December 3, 5:30 pm, at Jonathan Bourne Public Library. You can enjoy cocoa while viewing and bidding on the 20+ trees benefiting local charities. And, at 6 pm the large tree in front of the library will be lit to mark the beginning of the holiday season.

You can bid from now until December 16th. From 7 – 8 pm, the library will celebrate at a Final Bids Reception when the Silent Auction will end and the trees will be awarded to the highest bidders.

Holiday Splash – Dec 11

Join us for a day of free family fun at our annual Holiday Splash Open House!

Date: December 11th
Time: 12:00 noon – 3:00 p.m.
Place: 120 Main Street, Buzzards Bay

Event includes face painting, education on marine life, kids’ crafts, snacks and beverages, bake sale items, and an opportunity to meet and take a picture with Santa Claus!

All proceeds from the event will benefit the NMLC.

A special thanks to Professor Whitten’s Communications and Event Planning classes at Bridgewater State University for planning and organizing this event! And to PR/Marketing intern Katrina Lessard for helping to coordinate the festivities. And to Gregg Seibert and Purple Turtle Productions for sponsoring the event.

Marine Life Tree at Highfield Hall

‘Tis the season to deck the halls, and we’ve been having fun. Highfield Hall in Falmouth invited the National Marine Life Center to decorate a tree with a marine animal theme. Adorned with decorations generously loaned by Twig’s of Falmouth (178 Main Street, Falmouth), the tree is an underwater delight!

Nestled under the tree are gifts available at NMLC’s Gift Shop, 120 Main Street, Buzzards Bay. Holiday shopping hours are 10 am – 5 pm December 4-5 and 11-12, or weekdays by appointment at 508-743-9888.

You can visit this and other beautifully decorated trees at the Holidays at Highfield, December 3-5.

The Spirit of the Season

We have received such nice letters and notes of support along with your year-end donations. Thank you! One of our favorites was the following, from donors in North Truro.

“December 29, 2009

“Friends,

“Our family decided many years ago that we would step decisively away from the commercial aspects of Christmas. We agreed that we would no longer give each other individual gifts, but instead we would dedicate the cash saved to causes which call to all of us. This has turned out to be a much more gratifying way to celebrate the spirit of the season.

“This year, in the days leading up to Christmas, we read, in the Cape Cod Times, of the shortfall which is keeping your building project from coming to completion. We were especially concerned, knowing how many turtles are depending upon you – right now. These turtles appear on our neighborhood beaches, and we’ve known many of them personally. We have decided that we want to make a small gift in support of the goal of opening the “turtle ward” as soon as possible. We wish that we might offer a larger sum – but these are bracing times for humans as well.

“May your efforts proceed with all due speed. Many thanks for all your efforts on behalf of sentient beings.”
