Artist Profile: Odin Smith
“Odin Kaeselau Smith is a native Cape Cod artist who resides in Harwich MA, with her husband and five young sons whose ages range from 3 to 13 years old. She is a full time mother who uses her ‘spare’ moments to capture time, light and emotion through her artwork.
“Odin’s subjects reflect her upbringing on Cape Cod, often depicting the natural beauty of the landscape and its interesting and colorful attractions. She often finds paintings in the places that are hidden or unknown to the average tourist. This allows her work to portray the intense emotion that growing up on this peninsula has generated. She paints landscapes, still life and an occasional portrait.
“Odin comes from an artistically talented family, which presently includes both of her sisters, who are also artists, and her brother, an accomplished guitarist. She has roots in the heart of the Provincetown art colony, in the days of Charles Hawthorne. She is the granddaughter of the late Charles Anton Kaeselau, a Provincetown artist, who holds an important place in the Cape’s art history. His late wife, Odin’s paternal grandmother, Marguerite Benjamin Kaeselau was also an accomplished artist, who worked in book and advertisement illustration. Her grandparents have always been an inspiration to her. Mrs. Smith’s young children also show promise in the art field.
“Mrs. Smith is a self-taught artist who works in pastel, watercolor and acrylic. She feels that each painting or illustration is a discovery and education in itself, and is always open to new ideas.
“She has won several awards, and has shown in many juried exhibitions, including the PPSCC National Juried Exhibition, the ‘Women Creating’ show held at the Cahoon Museum of American Art, the Leo Diehl Exhibition, and the All Cape Cod Art Show to name a few. She is also a professional illustrator, with experience in magazine and book cover illustration.
“Odin is a member of the Guild of Harwich Artists, the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, MA, and an Artist Member of the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, MA.”
