Casting Call: Our Additional Pup Stars
Beyonseal, named after the fabulous Beyonce, came to us from Licolnville, Maine. She was brought to us by the College of the Atlantic on May 31, weighing 6.7 kg (14.8 lb). She came in as an abandoned dependent pup, and has had to battle her way through rehabilitation so far. She is combating a viral infection and low sodium values. Although she has had her ups and downs we are hopefully we will be able to get her on the road to recovery.
Queen Sealizabeth, named after Queen Elizabeth, was collected from Owl’s Head in Maine by Marine Mammals of Maine. She arrived on June 3 weighing in at 9.4 kg (20.7 lb). She came in as a abandoned dependent pup with low blood proteins and dehydration. Since Queen Sealizabeth came in as abandoned dependent pups, she has been taught to swim, hunt, and eat fish. She is now reigning over the pup room in NMLC’s rehabilitation hospital.
Seally Field, named for the actress Sally Field, was also collected from Owl’s Head, Maine with Queen Sealizabeth by Marine Mammals of Maine (MMoME). She arrived here with Queen Sealizabeth on June 3, weighing 8.5 kg (20.9 lb), also an abandoned dependent pup. Shortly after admit Seally spiked a high fever and suffered from seizures. She has since made great strides, though she hasn’t yet mastered the art of eating fish on her own. She has “fish school” lessons daily and we hope she will be self sufficient soon.
Another pup star this season is Seal Patrick Harris, named for actor Neal Patrick Harris, he was collected by the same group from Kennebunk, Maine. He was brought in to us on June 7, weighing 7.3 kg (16.1 lb). He too was an abandoned dependent pup; he came in with low sodium, and dehydration.
Kurt Russeal, named after the actor Kurt Russell, was found at Rockland, Maine. He was brought to us by MMoME on June 4, weighing 8.9 kg (19.6 lb). He came in as an abandoned dependent pup who has been battling some major digestive issues.
Kurt’s roommate, Sealvia Plath, named for the author Sylvia Plath, came from South Thomaston, Maine. She was brought to us on the same day as Kurt, from MMoME as well. Weighing 6.7 kg (14.8 lb), she was also a dehydrated abandoned dependent pup.
Since they all came in so young, they are being taught to swim, hunt, and eat fish. When they first arrived, they were tube-fed pup formula, a milk matrix mixed with fish oil, five times a day. They have now all been weaned onto fish gruel or are eating whole fish now that they have outgrown the pup formula. They get daily swim time, and learn to hunt fish through “fish school”, where we pull fish around the pool to entice the pups into pursuing them.
You can even watch them on our live stream hospital cameras in the Discovery Center, open 10am-5pm every day of the week. You can also support their rehabilitation with a symbolic adoption (which makes a great gift!), a gift of supplies from our Amazon Smile Wishlist, or a monetary donation to purchase food and medical equipment. Beyonseal, Queen, Seally, Seal Patrick, Kurt, and Sealvia thank you and are hopeful for a speedy return to the ocean!
